Even if you aren’t a fan of football, you likely know who Jerry Rice is. He has a reputation of being a jerk, but one thing he said many years ago has stuck with me.
When his career started out a bit rocky he said, “Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.”
When I think about writing and (snail) mailing out grant request letters, I think of this quote.
My goal with my grant clients is always to grow their grant budgets from $0 to $1M within a few years. This is my specialty and my niche.
A few times a year, I gather all the grant opportunities without websites or online applications and start drafting letters.
I customize each letter based on the information I can gather about the grant giver and I mail them all out.
Most of them (80% of them) are ignored, and I never hear back. But there are always a few who respond. They either reach out for more information or simply mail a check back.
I am getting ready to do this again this week. The last time I sent out a bunch of letters was in January and we received $18,000 in unrestricted funds.
My guess is that very few grant writers send them letters, so they are happy to reward the ones who do.
Until next time,
