#281 I didn’t plan to take a break from these emails…

I am back! I apologize. I didn’t plan to take a break from this email.

I traveled to Nigeria from the end of April until last week, and I brought my laptop with me in anticipation of keeping up with these daily emails.

Well, the power cord for my laptop “disappeared” from my luggage, so I lugged around a dead laptop for two weeks. There is no “next day” Amazon delivery in Nigeria, so I resigned to the fact that I would miss sending these emails for the first time in more than a year.

For the first time in several years, I took a two-week vacation without working. It involved a significant amount of preparation, and it was well worth it. I underestimated the positive mental health benefits of stepping back from work for so long, and I am so glad that I took the leap.

Here is a pic of me at the Lekki Conservation Center in Lagos, Nigeria.

Here are the things I did to be able to step away from work for so long:

  • I became hyper-organized. I made sure that my grant pipeline was up to date and that every grant deadline was accounted for. There was no room for “last minute deadline” interventions.
  • I communicated personally with each client. I assured them that all deadlines would be met and their scopes of work would be fulfilled.
  • My team and I completed and submitted all proposals that were due while I was traveling.
  • I rescheduled all calls and meetings.
  • I assigned grant webinars and informational sessions to my team and had them use Fathom to record so I could review later if needed.

Burnout is real, and we need to take breaks. What I learned is that, even though I hadn’t planned to miss any of these emails, nothing blew up, my clients are still happy, and I returned from the break energized and ready to conquer the second half of 2025.

Until next time,
