#280 Developing grant strategies for individual programs

Having an overall grant strategy is standard. Setting goals, creating a researched and vetted grant calendar, and writing multiple narratives- these are all part of a macro grant strategy.

Do you develop micro grant strategies for each program within the organization?

I recently started thinking more about this, and here is my approach…

Most of my clients have multiple programs within their organization. These programs target different demographics, offer different services, and require different levels of funding.

When I develop a program grant strategy, I reverse engineer it. First, I look at the program annual budget. Then I look at the median grant amount in the program’s focus area. I divide the total program budget by the median grant amount, and that lets me know approximately how many grants I will need to win to meet the goal. I add 250% to that number, and this is how many grants I will apply for.

I do this for each program. This approach allows me to apply for grant funding that is proportionate to the individual needs of the programs.
