It seems that the United States is experiencing natural disasters everywhere. I have a client in California affected by wildfires, clients in Florida devastated by hurricanes, and a client in North Carolina affected by flooding.
They all have one thing in common- they were unprepared and unable to serve their communities during and immediately following the natural disaster.
They needed a plan and funding…

In response to all the unusual weather events, several funders are offering capacity-building and program grants specifically for natural disaster recovery and preparation.
I have helped a few of my clients put these programs together so we can submit them for grant funding.
First, we ask the tough question: How did we fail our community? What did they need that we were unable to provide?
Then, what could we do differently to make sure that we are meeting their needs when the next natural disaster occurs?
For example, for one client, it means assembling a response team to go door to door to check on veterans to assess their safety and immediate needs.
For a food pantry, it could be installing generators to keep food cold and prevent spoilage.
A grief support center could use its facility to prepare hot meals for the families they serve following a hurricane.
Whatever the plan, develop the activities, communication and outreach, equipment required, and a budget.
Money is available for this type of project and if you live in an area affected by natural disasters, it only makes sense to take advantage of the funding.
Until next time,
