#129 5 Reasons why grant professionals are so important

I was reading through a grant-related Facebook group today and saw a non-profit looking for a grant writer to write a specific grant for them.

A grant professional reviewed the link for the grant and was gracious enough to let them know that they should not be applying for this grant. The organization was too new, the government RFP was only to be awarded to one recipient, and the organization didn’t have the financial standing to meet the grant criteria.

This got me thinking about the reasons why grant professionals are so important.

Here are my top 5 reasons:

  1. We know how to vet grants. Grant professionals have insights specific to what we do. We have research skills and can intuit which grant applications will yield the best results.
  2. We know how to include nuances that win grant awards—small yet important details like specifically matching our statement of need to the funder’s missions, etc.
  3. Grant professionals can craft a narrative. Writing a grant isn’t just about conveying facts- it is about telling a story convincingly and compellingly.
  4. We pay attention to details. We cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s because we know the importance of a complete proposal.
  5. We know what funders want. We know how to research a funder to see what they fund and what they like.

Funders can tell when an organization had a staff member complete the grant proposal and when a grant professional completed it. There is a big difference.
