#112 The results are in- are grant givers cool with AI generated grant proposals?

When I think about AI (artificial intelligence), I think of a useful tool that we all use in some form every day. Digital assistants, chat bots, Amazon suggestions, smart home devices, face recognition- all AI.

I talked about the GPA policy on AI and my process here.

Candid recently surveyed grantmakers to find out how they feel about using AI in grant writing.

I have always been an “early adopter.” When something new comes out, I want to try it. Will it make life easier? Will it give me more free time? When the Amazon Dot first came out, I began creating digital grocery lists, and they have saved me so much time.

I volunteered as a beta tester when grant AI software began to hit the market. I have tried several, and I use Grantable.

Here is why…

I have worked with most clients for years, so I have written hundreds of grants for them. Grantable allows me to upload my grants into a library. I can organize them by client, project, etc.

When I start writing a new grant, I upload the application into Grantable, and the AI uses my grant library to answer the prompts for the new application. This saves me at least 1-2 hours per grant application. Once the AI does its thing, I go back through, review every response, tweak it, and add to it.

This AI isn’t scraping the web or making up false information. It is using my own responses from previous grants to speed up the grant application process.

Grantable offers a free grant writing course that explains the process.

So, how do grantmakers feel about grant writers using AI?

The short answer is- They have no way of knowing if AI was used.

Of the funders surveyed, 57% admitted that they don’t know whether they’ve received applications created with AI. 42% said that they haven’t received applications created with AI, but when prompted further, many admitted that they don’t really have any way of knowing.

There is no definitive way to know if a grant proposal was created with AI assistance. One funder said, “We are agnostic to the tools that applicants use to create grant applications. Whether assisted by AI or not, applicants need to articulate their needs and alignment with our areas of giving in order to receive favorable assistance.”

Using Grantable allows me to write more grants in less time and maintain the level of quality needed to win grants. Why wouldn’t I use a tool that enables me to be a more effective grant writer?
