#111 Do you avoid national grants?

When I converse with other grant writers, and they learn that I contract with clients with budgets under $1M, most are surprised that I apply for national grants.

There is a common misconception that small non-profit organizations are unlikely to win large national grants.

This doesn’t mean you should apply for national grants immediately after receiving your 501(c)(3), but you may not have to wait as long as you think.

I talk about timing and applying for national grants here.

There are a few key elements to consider when applying for a national grant.

  • Is your mission a perfect match for the grant? National grants are highly competitive and will only award organizations that perfectly match their giving focus.
  • Can you establish an irrefutable statement of need? The grant committee is unlikely to understand the nuances of your region, so explaining the urgency of the need is critical to success.
  • Stand out. Your application will be one in a sea of thousands. How can you stand out? Include visuals, a link to a video, success stories, and anything to differentiate your organization.

Here is the short list of the national grants I have been awarded over the past few years on behalf of my small but mighty clients:

  • American Eagle Outfitters Foundation
  • NFL Healthy Relationship Grant
  • Women in Sports Foundation Sports4Life Grant
  • People’s Impact Network
  • Ronald McDonald’s House Charitable Foundation
  • Sprouts Famer’s Market Foundation Grant
  • Bill Belichick Foundation
  • Just One More Foundation
  • Marco Promos
  • New York Life Foundation

National grants are not out of reach as long as your documents are in order, your mission is an exact focus match, and your narrative is compelling.

Until next time,
