I am fascinated with the science of mindshift and how dramatically simple shifts in thinking can transform our lives.
More specifically, I have been analyzing some of my own thought patterns to identify if I am residing in a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
How does this apply to grant writing?

When I speak to fellow grant writers, a common mindset is that grant writing is very competitive and getting funded is difficult. I admit that I fall into that mindset at times. Grant writing is not for the faint of heart. This is a fixed mindset.
I was part of a grant professionals forum last year and it turned into endless complaining about funders and how hard everything is and how political the process can be, etc. The conclusion was formed that funders don’t really want to fund most organizations and they look for reasons not to.
Listening to my colleagues complain sparked a thought in my weird brain and led to a powerful mindshift.
What if we reframe our thoughts to believe that funders WANT to fund us. Because they really do WANT to fund our organizations. It is their primary reason for existing.
I began writing grants with this shift in mindset. I would think, “This funder really wants to fund this grant. All I have to do is avoid giving them a reason not to fund it.”
I now approach every question knowing that it will get funded unless I give them a reason not to. This subtle shift in mindset has helped me win more grants and become an overall better grant writer.
Try it when you write your next grant and let me know what happens.
Until next time,
