Last week, I wrote a grant for a fairly new client. It is a recurring grant, and I reviewed the previous year’s awarded grant application before starting this year’s grant.
I wanted to ensure continuity and also strategize ways to reasonably ask for an increase in funding.
What I discovered is the topic of this email- what does a general operating grant fund?

The recurring grant is for general operations. These grants are like unicorns with fairy dust. I LOVE general operating grants.
Even though the grant is for general operations, the previous grant writer wrote it for program expenses. WHY?!
And I have seen these discussions on social media, so I thought I would talk about it here.
General operating grants are gifts because they will fund day to day operations and basically anything that will forward the mission.
It is a mostly flexible, unrestricted grant that will fund:
- Rent
- Staff salaries
- Professional fees
- Fundraising
- Technology
- Basically, anything that strengthens the organization
These types of grants tend to have the most impact on the organization’s sustainability as a whole.
My advice is to take full advantage of general operating grants and include the expenses that program grants won’t cover.
Until next time,
