I love visiting grant writer forums and social media groups. I learn so much from others, like myself, working in the grant writing trenches every day.
Almost daily, I see a post about how to gauge how much time a specific grant application will take, and I have been thinking a lot about this topic.
Last month, I wrote about ways to determine if a grant is too small to waste your time applying. You can read that one here.

If you missed the deadline to enroll in Freelance Grant Writer Academy, join the waitlist. If you want to replace your full-time income while writing grants at home, you will love Holly’s content.
The next session opens in Fall 2024, but she still sends out great content when you join the waitlist.
I also consider whether a grant application is too long or in-depth and if it will be worth the time spent to complete it.
I do all the usual things to evaluate:
- Read through the RFP to see if my answer bank has answers to most of the questions. (more about this tomorrow)
- Make sure I already have all of the deliverables required.
- Look through past grant recipients to make sure they fund orgs like mine.
But, recently I came across a cool free tool on the Grant Professionals Association website that I want to share.
GrantAdvisor.org is a free website that allows grant writers to leave anonymous reviews of grant funders to help other grant writers make informed decisions.
I have a tough but important grant deadline coming up, and I searched for the grantmaker on Grant Advisor and read some very helpful feedback. I learned it takes an average of 11 hours to complete this particular grant, but the grant administrators are very helpful if you email them for feedback.
If we (grant writers) start using this tool and leaving our anonymous feedback, we could help each other better understand grant funders. (And win more funding.)
Until next time,
