#617 Grant trends to watch as we head toward 2027

As organizations plan for 2027, there’s no shortage of predictions about what funders will prioritize.

Some trends are worth watching. But a trend is not a funding strategy, and we shouldn’t reshape our work around a buzzword just because it’s appearing in headlines.

Here are a few developments grant professionals may want to track:

More attention to outcomes and evidence. Funders may ask for clearer explanations of what changed, for whom, and how the organization knows. That makes consistent, useful data practices more important than ever.

Greater interest in collaboration. Partnerships can strengthen a proposal when they reflect real coordination, shared goals, and clearly defined roles. A list of logos or last-minute letters of support won’t substitute for a working relationship.

Continued pressure on operating capacity. Staff retention, technology, compliance, and administrative infrastructure affect whether organizations can deliver on funded work. Be ready to explain the capacity behind the program, not just the program idea.

More scrutiny of budgets and sustainability. Funders may want to understand a project’s full cost, what happens after a grant ends, and whether the organization can manage the award responsibly.

AI in grant development. AI tools may help with research and drafting, but human review remains essential. Proposals still need accurate facts, appropriate data handling, and language that reflects the organization’s real work.

These are signals to monitor, not guarantees about what every funder will do.

Read current guidelines, follow funder communications, and pay attention to changes in your own region and field. We will keep reporting on changes and predictions in this email, of course.

The organizations best positioned for 2027 won’t be the ones chasing every trend. They’ll be the ones that understand their work, know their evidence, and can explain why a particular opportunity fits.
