#512 Government grants are bigger- and more difficult

Every year, GrantStation releases a State of Grantseeking Report, and every year, I break out the most meaningful data and discuss it.

The 2026 State of Grantseeking™ Report revealed something important:

The median largest government award in 2025?

$240,000.

The median largest non-government award?

$50,000.

And the median largest Federal award?

$500,000.

Government funding remains substantially larger — but less frequent.

What this means:

If your organization needs transformational revenue, government funding matters.

But readiness requirements increase significantly:

  • Compliance systems
  • Indirect cost strategy
  • Staff capacity
  • Audit readiness
  • Strong evaluation models
  • Reporting capacity

Interestingly, 21.4% of federal grant recipients waived indirect cost recovery.

That’s revenue left on the table.

How we can be more successful:

✅ If pursuing federal funding, develop a clear indirect cost strategy.
✅ Educate leadership on compliance demands before applying.
✅ Build internal capacity first — not after award.

Government funding is powerful.

But it rewards preparedness.
