#364 The REAL problem in grant writing

Recently, Kim Joyce posted an interesting piece on LinkedIn that resonated with me, so I wanted to share it.

The nonprofit industry has issues- true enough. And, so does the world of grant writing.

But, one of the biggest issues has nothing to do with the nonprofit organizations or us- the grant writers. It is 100% a funder issue.

Here’s what Kim had to say…

“Nobody’s talking about a REAL problem in grant writing:

Grant portals are killing nonprofits.

Every funder has their own:

  1. Different logins
  2. Separate passwords
  3. 2-step verification
  4. Unique interfaces
  5. New learning curves

Nonprofits spend more time fighting with portals than writing grants.

Small organizations are drowning in tech overhead.

This isn’t efficient.

Funders need to work together.

They need to beware of the bright and shiny new object (portal).

  • One unified portal
  • One login
  • One system

Until then?

Grant pros handle the tech maze.”

She prompted everyone to vent about their grievances with the grant portal.

I found myself agreeing with nearly every response.

Navigating deadlines is difficult enough without also navigating passwords and logins.

However, when nonprofit organizations face challenges, such as managing multiple grant portals, professional grant service providers become more valuable

It is a double-edged sword.
