Have you ever been on a grant review panel? If not, let me paint a picture for you.
You are sitting at your laptop with several files staring at you. Each one you open is a big wall of text with some numbers sprinkled in.
You’re tired. Your eyes are starting to glaze over. But then, you open a grant application with visuals. That is refreshing.
The program outcomes aren’t simply numbers- you can visualize an unhoused family enjoying a hot meal after a difficult day. You can see the joy on a child’s face when they are presented with new school supplies. Suddenly, the wall of text turns into changed lives.

The grants we write aren’t just forms or paperwork. They are our one chance to break through the monotony of walls of text and make a human connection.
When you sit down to write a proposal, ask yourself- would this make a tired grant reviewer pay attention and perk up? Or would it make their eyes glaze over?
Until next time,
