#318 “What sets you apart from other grant writers?”

I was on a call today with a new client. It was my first formal call with them, and we were working on grant readiness and prepping the necessary documents for grant proposals.

They recently fired their previous grant writer for failure to perform, and I was referred to them by their non-profit consultant.

The call was wrapping up, and one of the board members asked, “What separates you from other grant writers?”

I love this question and have given thought to why some grant writers are successful and others aren’t. Let’s assume that the organization is well-positioned and appealing to grant funders.

What makes me different?

The answer is both complex and straightforward- I am dynamic, and all successful grant writers are too.

Funders are ever-changing. The grant landscape is ever-changing. Non-profit programs and needs are ever-changing. Community needs are ever-changing.

Successful grant writers balance all of these factors and consider the intersectionality of each at any given time.

Grant writers who copy and paste narratives and fail to consider the nuanced priorities of funders will fall behind.

Which are you?

Until next time,
