I am in the process of onboarding a new client, and I am thrilled to work with them.
During my final interview with the board, I was asked, “What do you foresee as your biggest challenge?”
I immediately knew that my biggest challenge would be convincing grant funders of the program’s impact without measuring long-term outcomes.

When we write grants for direct service organizations that do not measure long-term outcomes, there are certain challenges.
Here are a few ways I overcome them:
- If your participants are referred to you by partner organizations, you can discuss how you rely on the partner organization to track long-term outcomes and refer to you as needed.
- You can use research about the service you provide to demonstrate that, although you do not track long-term outcomes, studies show that your service has the following impact.
- Measure short-term outcomes and focus on that impact.
I am sure there are several other strategies to overcome this challenge, but these are the ones I have successfully used recently.
Until next time,
