#108 Why would a grant writer need insurance?

In 2004, I started a Home Watch business in Southwest Florida. There is a unique demographic of people who live in Florida for 4-6 months of the year. Floridians call them “snowbirds.”

They place their homes at risk when they leave their Florida homes for 6-8 months. If a rook or AC leak occurs while they are away, they could return to a house full of mold.

The “snowbirds” would hire me and my company to check in on their properties weekly to water plants, check security, and ensure that all was well with their homes.

This was when I first heard about Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance, which is also known as Professional liability insurance.

I was plugging along happily in my business when my insurance friend asked if I had E&O insurance. E & what?- that was my response.

I educated myself about it and immediately purchased an E&O policy. As a home watch, the insurance would protect my mistake if I missed a small water leak and it turned into a more significant issue. Having the insurance policy also made it easier to sign on more clients, and they felt more protected.

As grant writers, we are paid for our skills and knowledge. Everyone makes mistakes, which can put us at risk of professional liability. Consultants and businesses can be named in lawsuits, even if the fault was not ours. Insurance for grant writers protects us.

I have so much more to share with you about grant writer insurance, so expect a few more emails with this type of information.
