#456 Have you struggled with outcomes that don’t actually measure anything?

There are certain phrases that show up in proposals again and again:

  • Increase awareness
  • Improve understanding
  • Provide resources
  • Support families

They sound meaningful. But from a funder’s perspective, they’re incomplete.

How much awareness? For whom? Measured how? Over what time period?

Vague outcomes are one of the fastest ways to weaken a proposal. They suggest the program may not have a clear evaluation plan—or worse, that impact hasn’t been fully defined.

Strong outcomes are specific, measurable, and realistic. They answer the question: What will be different because this program exists?

If you can’t picture the data you’ll report at the end of the grant, the outcome probably needs refinement.

Clarity wins. Every time.
