#91 What is your nonprofit’s differentiator?

Most nonprofit organizations fall into at least one of six categories. As part of the grant process, we may have to check a box to indicate which category makes the most sense.

But, that is just the beginning. Successful grant funding lies in our differentiators.

For example, mental health is a common category. It makes sense- nearly every community in the United States could benefit from improved mental health and additional resources.

That doesn’t mean you will win every mental health grant.

If you craft a grant proposal that states that you will provide mental health counseling to those in need, that will not win grants.

Lots of places are doing that. What makes you different?

Is your nonprofit a response to a longitudinal community report that indicates that the suicide rate among senior veterans is disproportionately high. So you have customized a mental health program for that demographic? If so, that is more likely to win grants in the mental health, senior, and veterans categories.

Do you have a program that provides play therapy for children in foster care? Or wilderness therapy for victims of sexual assault?

What does your nonprofit do differently and do well? Focus on that and develop your grant strategy around that.
