#622 Coping with the grant award whiplash

Over the past 10 days, I helped clients secure $350,000 in grant funding.

Those are the moments that make this work feel incredible. A program can move forward. Staff can be supported. An organization can breathe a little easier.

And then there are the dry spells.

Weeks can pass without a decision, an award, or even a response from a funder.

The contrast can be jarring: one week you’re celebrating multiple wins; the next, you’re wondering whether your work is making any difference at all.

That emotional swing is real in the grant services business. But a quiet stretch does not automatically mean your strategy is failing. Funders have their own review timelines, budgets, and decision processes, many of which are outside your control.

A few practices help me stay grounded:

Track the work, not only the awards. Record proposals submitted, relationships developed, and improvements made, not just dollars won.
Keep a wins file. Save award notices, client feedback, and examples of proposals that moved an organization forward. Revisit it when confidence dips.
Review the pipeline regularly. A healthy pipeline helps ensure that one decision doesn’t define your outlook.
Celebrate the process milestones. A strong prospect identified or a clearer funding strategy is progress, even before a check arrives.
Protect your energy. Build realistic timelines and don’t let every rejection or delay become a verdict on your ability.
When a big win comes, enjoy it. Share it with the team, recognize the work behind it, and let yourself feel proud.

Then remember: the award is a wonderful outcome, but your professional value is not measured only by what a funder decides.

Until next time,
