#558 Your organization’s history matters more than you think

Nearly every grant proposal starts with Organization History.

It isn’t glamorous, but it is an important piece of every proposal.

Many grant professionals treat it as “something to get through” before the real proposal begins.

But funders are reading it differently.

They’re asking:

  • Can this organization deliver?
  • Do they have a track record?
  • Are they stable, credible, and aligned with their mission?

In other words — this section builds trust.

And too often, it misses the mark.

Common issues:

  • It reads like a timeline instead of a story
  • It includes too much detail that doesn’t matter
  • It doesn’t connect past work to current impact

A strong organizational history does three things well:

It shows why you exist
It demonstrates what you’ve done
It reinforces why you’re positioned to do this work now

Not everything needs to be included.

Only what strengthens your case.

For example:

Instead of listing every milestone, focus on:

Founding purpose and community need
Key program growth or evolution
Demonstrated impact over time
Any credibility markers (partnerships, recognition, scale)
Action steps:

✅ Cut anything that doesn’t support your current proposal
✅ Highlight growth, impact, and consistency
✅ Connect your history directly to what you’re proposing

Your history isn’t just context.

It’s evidence.

And strong evidence gets funded.
