#550 Stop recycling last year’s proposal

It’s tempting to start with last year’s proposal.

Copy, paste, tweak, submit.

It feels efficient.

It saves time.

It gives you a head start.

But here’s the problem:

Outdated proposals are one of the fastest ways to weaken your application.

Because things change.

  • Your programs evolve
  • Your data improves (or shifts)
  • Funder priorities update
  • Language and expectations move forward

And when those updates aren’t reflected, it shows.

You end up with:

  • Old statistics that don’t match current realities
  • Outcomes that no longer align with your work
  • Narratives that feel slightly off — even if you can’t immediately see why

Funders are reading for relevance.

Not just effort.

Action steps:

✅ Treat past proposals as a reference — not a template
✅ Refresh your data and outcomes before drafting
✅ Re-align your narrative to the specific funder every time

Starting fresh doesn’t mean starting from zero.

It means building from what’s current and true.

Because the strongest proposals reflect where your organization is now — not where it was a year ago.

Until next time,
