One of the strategies I use to grow small to midsized nonprofits from a $0-$1M grant budget is to “snowball.”
I talk about that in detail here.
It is an effective strategy, but it takes relationships and creativity.
There’s an assumption that once you win a grant, it will continue.
The data suggests otherwise.
- 58.9% of organizations said recurring grants made up 25% or less of their funding
In other words:
Most grant funding is not repeat funding.
That changes how you should think about sustainability.

If you’re constantly replacing lost grants, you’re not scaling — you’re maintaining.
Action step:
✅ Build a renewal strategy for every grant you win
✅ Prioritize relationship-building with current funders
✅ Track which grants are truly renewable vs. one-time
Winning the grant is step one.
Keeping the funder is where long-term stability is built.
