#453 Board engagement matters to grant proposals

Most grant writers don’t include “Board Engagement” in their grant readiness, even though it’s important to grant funders.

Before you submit another grant, ask your ED if the board is engaged.

Funders often view board giving, board attendance, and board involvement as indicators of organizational stability. Yet many proposals focus on programs while barely mentioning governance.

If board giving is low or inconsistent, that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker—but it does signal something to reviewers.

Strong grant strategy includes understanding how leadership is perceived externally. A board that participates financially (at any level) and is actively engaged strengthens the credibility of the entire proposal.

Even if the proposal doesn’t explicitly ask about the board engagement, it is helpful to add information about it- even if just a sentence or two.

Take a moment to assess:
Are we presenting a picture of strong governance?
And if not, what needs to shift internally?

Because funders aren’t just funding programs. They’re funding leadership.
