One of the most frustrating things I hear as a grant writer is, “We’ll figure that out later if we get the grant.”
We know that grant funders do not share this level of confidence and optimism. They want everything figured out before they award the funding.
Whether it’s evaluation plans, sustainability, or program details, vague answers are a fast track to a weak proposal. Funders are investing in organizations that demonstrate readiness- not just good intentions.

As grant writers, we often see this gap early. When key pieces aren’t clearly defined for us, proposals become an exercise in guesswork, and that uncertainty is obvious to experienced grant reviewers.
The solution isn’t perfection- it is preparation. Encourage EDs and program staff to define outcomes, roles, timelines, and budgets before applying. This will strengthen both the proposal and the actual program.
In grant writing, “later” usually means “too late.” Clear planning up front protects our time, credibility, and funding potential.
Until next time,
