#419 To the helpers who are tired today

Today is hard.

There are moments when the work feels heavier than usual.

Now is one of those moments.

In light of the violence and confusion we are witnessing, many of us are carrying anger, grief, fear, and exhausion all at once.

And if you are feeling that way, I want you to hear this clearly…

It means you have a heart.

Grant writers are helpers. We work behind the scenes to resource safety, care, housing, justice, healing. We translate need into language funders understand. We hold other people’s urgency every single day.

But helpers need help too.

Today, I’m exhausted. I’m angry. I’m struggling to focus. And I’m naming that out loud because pretending otherwise doesn’t serve the work—or the people we care about.

If you can’t focus today, that’s okay.
If your capacity is lower, that’s okay.
If you need to pause before pushing forward, that’s okay.

What matters is that we don’t check out completely.

We rest.
We care for ourselves.
We check on the people around us.
We remember why we do this work in the first place.

Self‑care isn’t disengagement. It’s how we stay human in a world that keeps asking us not to be.

So take the break. Drink the water. Step outside. Sit with your feelings instead of fighting them. And when you’re ready, come back to the work—not numb, not hardened, but grounded.

The world needs helpers who are whole.

And today, being whole might look like doing less—and feeling more.

Until next time,
