#332 My three step grant research and vetting process

I firmly believe that grant success is firmly rooted in intensive grant vetting and research.

We could write the perfect grant proposal, but if it doesn’t align with the funder or their funding patterns, it won’t be awarded.

After speaking with my fellow grant professional colleagues, I realize that I invest more time and effort into grant research than most grant writers.

Are there gaps in your grant process that you struggle to fill? Instrumentl has developed a simple quiz for grant professionals designed to identify areas of improvement and deliver a customized action plan.

I primarily use GrantStation and Instrumentl. For this discussion, I will refer to my process with Instrumentl. I create projects within the platform and add the appropriate filters. Then, when I need to add grants to my pipeline, I use three main steps:

  1. I sort the list by deadline and scan through each grant’s overview. I use either the Hide or Save button. This is the first round of vetting.
  2. Once I have a substantial Save list, I go through each opportunity on the list and visit their website. I make sure that the website is still active, that the info in Instrumentl matches, and I check out their application process and verify their deadline. At this point, I make sure that our mission very closely matches their funding focus. It has to match. Period.
  3. If they make the cut, they move on to the final stage of vetting. I scour their 990 and make sure that they are actually funding the way they say they are. If they say that they fund programs for children with disabilities, but their 990 shows that they have only funded children’s hospitals for the past three years, I will not waste my time.

If an opportunity makes it through the three steps, it gets moved over to the grant pipeline on Monday.com.

If you want to try out my 3 step process, Instrumentl has extended an exclusive THREE WEEK TRIAL! I have never seen this offered before, but they like us, so…

Sign up for the trial, and you will have 3 weeks to filter, research, and vet.

Let me know if these steps work for you.
