#309 Micromanagement is the enemy of efficiency

If you have a client or boss who wants to read every grant and question your reasoning for adding this sentence or mentioning this statistic, it is time to reconsider.

Professional grant service providers are professionals. What we do is a skill. We hone our craft. We develop best practices. We use knowledge of our funders and the grant landscape to carefully select our words.

Having to explain every part of this process inhibits efficiency.

Not to mention, it is frustrating and condescending.

Before I go any further, let me clarify that I am not suggesting that we don’t ask others for input or get fresh eyes on our narratives. Those are good ideas.

I am talking about the micromanager who wants to read each word before it goes out.

Do you trust your grant writer or not?

I can’t work in this type of environment.

There is a method to my madness. I may choose a variation of wording for one funder and a different variation for another funder.

There is a reason. And the clients who hire me do so because they trust me to be an expert in my field.

I can’t work in an environment where I am asked to explain everything I write and every choice I make about the process.

If you work in an environment like this, I implore you to reconsider.

Working for a micromanager is the fastest path to burnout.

Until next time,
