#226 Our job is so much more than writing grants

I prefer to use the term “grant professional” rather than grant writer because every great grant writer knows that writing grants is just a part of what we do.

I am not talking about wearing lots of hats or allowing your employer to push unrelated tasks on you. I am referring to the job of not just writing grants, but winning them, too.

I have done some bold and unconventional things to improve my clients’ chances of winning grants.

I list them below…

Here are just a few of the things I have done to win more grants:

Funders like to see organization leadership (Boards and Staff) representative of the people they serve. When a client does not meet this criterion, I make recommendations to help them get there.

If I don’t like how my client structures their budget and it doesn’t align with what grant funders want to see, I attend budget meetings and give recommendations. I explain why funders and donors want the budget structured in certain ways.

I recommend different types of collateral and even help design it sometimes. Examples are visual testimonials, annual impact reports, videos, photo collages, one-sheeters, etc. I use these materials to support grant proposals- they are essential.

Funders are becoming more specific about how they want outcomes and impact measured and stated. I review my clients’ evaluation tools and make recommendations based on funder trends and what they want to see.

Grant writing isn’t simply about typing out proposals, it is about helping your organization be in the best possible position to consistently win grants. As grant professionals, we consult, research, vet, write, create, report, and network.

Until next time,
