#22 Which is better: Freelance grant writer or grant writing employee?

When I was 27 years old, I quit my fancy corporate job. At the time, I was a single mom of two young children, and I needed more flexibility. I wanted to be present in my kids’ lives, and my job wanted to dominate most of my waking hours.

I started a business. A few years later, I sold that business and started another. I have now repeated this process four times, and it works well for me. At the same time, I am a freelance grant writer.

I love working alongside non-profit changemakers and growing their grant budgets. It is challenging but exciting. And since I also run an unrelated business and have a family, being a freelance grant writer fits my lifestyle.

Grant Writing Tip of the Day

Vague or unclear program objectives can make it difficult for the funder to understand the intended outcomes. Improve your proposal’s effectiveness by clearly stating the purpose and impact of the program.

I have discussed the pros and cons of freelancing vs being an employee within my grant writer community, and which is best really depends on the individual.

As someone who loves being self-employed, I could never be a full-time employee. I like to set my rates, set my schedule, and work with a variety of non-profits. As a grant-writing employee, you can always count on a paycheck, your taxes are paid for you, and you focus on one non-profit.

Both have their benefits and downfalls. I only have first-hand experience with freelance grant writing and I have been very happy with the experience. I write grants part-time, have four clients, and earn six figures.

If you are interested in becoming a freelance grant writer and don’t know how to get started, I highly recommend registering for Holly Rustick’s Freelance Grant Writing Webinar. It is free to register, and she never disappoints. I am registered and can’t wait.

Whether you are a seasoned grant writer or just getting started, Holly will walk you through whether freelancing is right for you, whether you should part-time or full-time grant write, and how to price your services. Again, her webinars are FREE!

Lucky for us, grant writing is in very high demand and is a great way to earn a very lucrative income while serving honorable causes. See you on the webinar!

Until next time,
