According to the National Center on Charitable Statistics, 30% of nonprofit organizations will fail within 10 years of starting. Recent polls reveal that only 57% of Americans trust nonprofits.
This data underscores grant writers’ critical challenge- the need to communicate credibility and foster trust and transparency with prospective funders. Taking proactive steps to develop strong relationships with funders is the only way to ensure long-term success.
Here are a few ways to do that…
Transparency
Transparent reporting, details highlighting progress and challenges, and realistic goals and outcomes are essential. For example, I recently applied for a recurring grant, and we did not meet our numbers for the previous year. I acknowledged that and explained why (a natural disaster and decreased funding) and what we plan to do to meet our number goals this year.
Data-Driven Storytelling
Demonstrating tangible results and the difference each funding dollar makes is an effective way to enhance grantmaker confidence. Using data within our narratives tells a compelling story. Bonus points if you align the measurable outcomes specifically with the funder focus.
Community Support
When a funder sees that an organization has cultivated strong support within their community, trust is enhanced. Inviting funders to events and initiatives is a way to involve them. If that isn’t possible, highlight support from the community.
As you move forward, prioritize these trust-building strategies in your grant writing.
