#186 How I contribute to fundraising events as a grant writer

One of the things I love about freelance grant writing is that I can keep my head down and focus on bringing in grant funding for my clients. I don’t have to worry about donors or events—I am one clearly defined cog in the development wheel.

But, there is some overlap, and grant writers can support other types of fundraising.

6-Month Calendar: $450 (30 grants)

12-Month Calendar: $720 (60 grants)

One of my clients has a large gala every year. It is their biggest fundraising event, and they count on it to bring in 20% of their annual budget. Last year, I wrote several product and sponsorship grants for the event and effectively reduced the cost of the event with the grant awards. Here are a few of the products covered by grants:

  • Attendee Gift Bags
  • Vacation (Silent Auction)
  • Wine and Liquor
  • Professional Sports Memorabilia (Silent Auction)

I don’t know the final value of the product grants, but they were sizable and equivalent to a few decent-sized monetary grants.

When you plan your grant strategy, consider including a few non-traditional product or event sponsorship grants. They are often less competitive and can add considerable value to your organization.

Until next time,
