We all know that one person who only reaches out to us when they need something. They need a ride somewhere, or they want to borrow money, or they need advice. And then once they get what they need, they are gone again. Until next time.
It is frustrating and leaves us feeling used.
Is that what your relationship looks like with funders?

It is true that funders exist to fund. But, they are much more, also. Many foundations want to be included in more ways. Some want to volunteer, some want regular impact updates, and others would love to collaborate on a project.
One of my funders volunteers to help with the annual holiday party. Another funder gushes over participant photos I send her and she immediately publishes them on the foundation social media sites. One of our big funders made an introduction to a partner and now the organization has increased capacity and impact.
If you only reach out to funders once a year when grant applications are due, you are missing out. Not only can developing relationships with funders open many other doors, but it also helps secure additional recurring funding.
When a funder is an active part of your mission and impact, they are motivated to fund year after year.
Until next time,
