#148 Should you include video in your grant applications?

Sometimes, we forget that grant funders are actual people. They have different learning styles and preferences. Think about how some people prefer audiobooks while others prefer reading books. Many people prefer watching movies and YouTube videos to learn.

As grant writers, we can improve our success rate by including multiple ways for grant funders to digest our mission and learn about our programming. Video is one great way.

There is a misconception that videos included in grant applications must be professional (expensive), but that is not true. The MacArthur Foundation requires a 90-second video as part of its grant proposal, and it reports that only 14% of the videos submitted involved professional production, and the average score of those projects was no higher than that of other top-scoring proposals.

I try to submit videos with every grant proposal. Two of my clients have videos with client testimonials. They are heartfelt and moving. The videos are updated once each year with new testimonials. Another client has a professional video demonstrating how the programming works. It is powerful because it involves an activity that most people don’t physically see, so the video helps it to make sense.
